Katya Johnson, a teacher at the School of Art and PhD candidate in Creative Writing, has just won a Welsh fiction prize for two short story submissions.
The first deals with the American artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler and his painting Harmony in Grey and Green (1872-4), which is also the title of the short story. The second story responds to the history of the herring fisheries in Borth, a coastal village north of Aberystwyth, and is entitled ‘The Silver Darlings’.

Katya has also recently been longlisted for the New Welsh Writing Awards prize for the best essay collection (shortlist to be announced on the 3rd May). Her submission was entitled ‘On the Endurance of Art’ and hinges on questions relating to the meaning and permanence of art, especially in the context of political conflict.
