School of Art postgraduates Carmel Reid and Angharad Taris have been chosen to show a selection of their works at Mall Galleries, London. Local artist selected for national survey of graduate art on display in London
FBA Futures
8 to 19 January 2019
Local Artist Angharad Taris has been selected for the seventh edition of FBA Futures, the annual exhibition showcasing the best in new contemporary figurative painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking by the outstanding art graduates of 2018. The exhibition is presented by the Federation of British Artists (FBA) at Mall Galleries in central London.
FBA Futures is the UK’s biggest annual survey of emerging contemporary figurative art, mapping new practices and ideas of representation and draughtsmanship. In 2019, forty-one artists and over eighty works will be presented in the largest exhibition of FBA Futures since it began in 2012.
Her paintings are a response to the place where she lives and was raised, the west coast of Wales in and around New Quay, Ceredigion. Her work explores her relationship with her environment and the spirit of the place. The Paintings do not set out to be precise representations: they are internal and external expressions of experience elicited by the painting process.
Angharad is studying for an MA in Fine Art: Painting at The School of Art, Aberystywth University and teaches Art for Lifelong Learning, Aberystwyth University. She is also a graduate from Central St Martin’s College of Art, London.
During FBA Futures, several awards will be made including the Be Smart About Art Award, Hottinger Prize for Excellence, and Great Art Visitors’ Choice Award.

Carmel Reid’s Biography & Statement
The artist utilises mark-making and thin glazes of acrylic paint to depict the moods and atmosphere she experiences in woodlands. This theme gradually began to emerge during her studies in Aberystwyth and continued to develop during her MA. Each woodland depicted is in a different location, with its own ecosystem that changes with the seasons, and as a result, each painting requires a different approach. However, Reid expresses no deep interest in nature; rather it is the variety of colour, texture and shapes observed in the flora that present the artist with infinite interpretations through her chosen medium.
During the winter months, I had an increasing sense of uneasiness when walking alone in the woods. I was always alert to the potential dangers and subconsciously these thoughts edged into my work. However, these feelings were not as prevalent during the summer when the woodland was brighter, greener and warmer. Whether it be winter or summer, the trees and branches formed barriers into the woodland when painting, creating various pathways. These offer a variety of routes for the audience who might be tempted to enter the woodland and perhaps create their own scenarios and stories, as I do myself.
