‘Zoe Preece: In Reverence’, Ceramic Gallery, Aberystwyth Arts Centre, 09/04-12/06/2022

Mae Zoe Preece, artist o Gaerdydd, wedi creu cyfres o wrthrychau domestig arferol, wedi’u cerfio’n fanwl â llaw o borslen, neu o blastr wedi’i durnio ar durn (peiriant sy’n troelli’n gyflym iawn, ac y gellir ei ddefnyddio i gerfio plastr). Mae’r gwrthrychau bregus hyn sydd wedi’u saernïo’n wych yn ceisio cyfleu agweddau anghyffyrddadwy, annifyrrol a bregus bywyd domestig. Caiff offer cegin a chelfi syml eu hystyried nid yn unig am eu ffurf a’u swyddogaeth ond hefyd am eu diben cymdeithasol a’r straeon maent yn eu corffori.

Ynghyd â’r porslen  ceir darnau o gelfi cerfluniol o bren collen Ffrengig, sydd wedi’u mowldio i edrych fel llieiniau sychu llestri wedi’u plygu, neu lyfr agored. Fe’u gwnaed mewn cydweithrediad â’r gwneuthurwr celfi Jennifer Finnegan, a Fablab Caerdydd, gan ddefnyddio’u prosesau sganio 3D a thechnolegau melino dan reolaeth cyfrifiadur.

Mae pob darn a gaiff ei wneud yn fanwl yn cymryd oriau i’w greu. Ar gyfer yr artist, mae gweithgarwch ailadroddus ac anweledig ei chrefft yn cyfateb i’r gwaith llafur domestig diddiwedd anweladwy a wneir yn y cartref. Y gwaith disylw hwn na chaiff ei werthfawrogi’n aml yw’r hyn y mae Preece yn ceisio’i gyfleu yn y gosodiad hwn.

Cardiff based artist Zoe Preece has created this series of ordinary domestic objects – intricately carved by hand from porcelain or turned from plaster on a lathe (a machine that spins at speed from which plaster forms can be carved). These fragile and beautifully crafted objects attempt to engage with the intangible, unsettling and tender aspects of domestic life. Simple kitchenware and furniture are contemplated not simply for their form and function, but their social purpose and the stories they embody.

Alongside the porcelain aresculptural furniture pieces made from walnut, with moulded forms such as folded tea towels folded or an open book. Made in collaboration with furniture maker Jennifer Finnegan, and Fablab Cardiff, using their 3D scanning processes and CNC milling technologies.

Each meticulously made piece takes many hours to create. For the artist, the repetitive and unseen activity of her craft resonates with the ceaseless, invisible domestic labour undertaken within the home. It is this often unnoticed, undervalued work that Preece tries to capture in this installation.
